I’m making an employee of the month certificate for work. I’ve got my template for the certificate all made up in Illustrator and now I need to take the picture of just the person and put her into the template. I’ve done it once before with a guy and I had no problem…my issue is hair.

You can get a look at the picture I’m trying to do now at <http://www.angelleye.com/temp/pic.jpg>

I’m using the select -> color range feature and I can get VERY close to a perfect selection because that’s an easy background. I run into trouble around the little peices of hair that are floating around all over the place. Without them the picture looks fake and I’m having a heck of a time figuring out how I can get them into my selection.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I was able to get a little better by using the quick mask and then painting over the hairs with a 1 pixel brush. It’s still not perfect but it’s ok. I’m still open to any tips you can give. Thanks!

Channel masking…select the channel with the best contrast between foreground (part you want to cut out) and background, duplicate the channel in the channels palette. Use levels to make the blacks blacker and the whites whiter..(you only want 2 colors here…black and white)Use the dodge (set to Highlights) and burn (set to shadows) tools to add or subtract from the selection…

When you are happy with the mask, load it using load selection icon at the bottom of the channels palette (cirlce of marching ants icon)
and delete background.

Here is another one of the many alternatives available to you. Work on a copy of the image to create this mask.
– Right click on the background in the layers palette and duplicate the background. Change the Blend Mode from Normal to Screen.
– Duplicate the duplicated layer once more. This new layer will automatically have its blend mode set to screen.
– Flatten the image
– Select the Channel tab in the palette and select the Blue channel. – Select All, and copy the channel to a new layer.
– Use the Extract filter to complete the job. Use a large sized brush around the head; one that is wide enough to capture all of that whispy hair. Use a finer brush for the rest of her.
– Crtl + Click the Extracted layer to make your selection which you can then save or drag onto the original image.

Also, read up on and experiment with the Background Eraser tool.
