Hello!
Alright, I have this portrait painting on my computer and I want to change all the dark shadows (which is dark blue) into a nice peachy dark color. (so it looks more natural!)

I want the modification to occur ONLY in the shadows.
The midtones and highlights should stay untouched.

Thank you for your time!
(I’m using Photoshop 7 by the way)

One approach you might try:

* Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer above the image. * Adjust the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders in this layer, looking only at the shadow areas, until the shadows look the way you want them to. Ignore the midtones and highlights completely.
* When the shadows look the way you want them, click OK. * Right click on the Hue/Sat adjustment layer to bring up the context menu and select "Blending Options…".
* In the "Underlying Layer" area of the "Blend If" section of the dialog box, move the highlight slider (the small white triangle at the bottom right of the gradient) toward the left until you get nearly the effect you are looking for. This should make the shadows have the color of the adjustment layer while leaving the midtones and highlights the color of the original image.
* Alt drag on the highlight slider (the little white triangle) to split it into two small white triangles.
* Move the two halves of the slider independently to fine tune the effect. This has the effect of blending the shadow color into the original image over the range covered by white triangles.
* If the effect isn’t quite right, you can also play with selecting one of the R,G or B channels from the "Blend If:" drop down menu and see if this does a better job.
