I currently own photoshop 6.0 educational version and I would like to upgrade to CS2 commercial version (because I am no longer in school). My question is, do I need to buy the full version ($650) in order to upgrade? or do I need to buy the upgrade commercial version ($150)?

Thanks 🙂

Just get the Upgrade, Jennifer. Academic versions can be upgraded exactly the same as commercial versions.

Question: When you upgrade an educational program to a never version (as stated above) – do you own then the "full version" and one is able to transfer the license to someone else?

Because I read that adobe does not transfer educational programs. But how about upgraded programs that are based on an educational version?

You should be able to transfer a full version even if it originates as an ed. version. Contact Adobe Customer Service to be sure.

I just upgrade from educational Photoshop CS to regular CS2 for $133 (full boxed version) from Digitallyunique.com. No problems and I am now on the regular version. AFAIK there is no difference anyway between the Ed. and regular version.

nope.

You sure Dave? I understood that as soon as you got your first non-educational version, you were considered a normal user. If so, you should be able to transfer.

I know it is not possible to transfer the actual educational version.

Don,

The Serial Number will still be an Educational one and the application will still display an educational startup screen, so I suspect Dave may well be correct in his belief that it would not be transferable

nope. 🙂

as soon as i went from full edu v6 to 7 retail upgrade the edu message on the splash went away. but as everything is based off the original edu license, and it’s explicitly denied transferability, the only things you could transfer are the upgrades… and there’s some debate as to whether that’s legal. 🙂

Dave,

as soon as i went from full edu v6 to 7 re<<

You got a new number with 7 as they changed the format from the old PWW600Rxxxxxxx-xx format to the new xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx format.

If you’d upgraded 5 Edu to 6 Retail, you wouldn’t have got the new serial# and the splash screen would still show it as an Edu version (the splash screen displayed depends upon the serial#).

I’m assuming the same is true for upgrades from 7 or CS Edu to CS or CS2 Retail.

that’s true. they changed the SN format.

gotcha. so anyone with say the cs edu version upgrading to cs2 will still show edu on the splash? interesting.

oops. you answered that. 🙂

you know… come to think of it, my cs upgrade and cs2 upgrade BOTH came with their own serial #’s… don’t know if that matters. both purchased from adobe online store. (7 was too but we’ve been over that…)

On the Mac side, upgrading the educational version of CS to CS2 removes the educational splash screen – no mention of edu now. Which surprised me, as my supplier actually gave me an education discount on the upgrade (saved about 50$aus over their standard price). And yes it came with its own new serial number.

The only thing an upgrade of CS2 does is check to make sure you have a previous version installed, or at least the CD of a previous version, regardless if it is an educational version. CS2 does not upgrade CS, it actually puts CS2 on your computer as another program. You can then use either CS or CS2. If you don’t have a previous version of Photoshop you can’t use an upgrade version and, therefor, will have to pay for a full version.
