How can you change the black lines of a scanned black white image to lines of one specific color (or another) when the "replace color" command doesn’t affect black ?

My purpose is to replicate the "ACE Logo Shiny Brass" excercise on page 18 (Down & Dirty Tricks)of the December 2004 edition of ‘Photoshop User’ magazine. The excercise starts with a gold colored line image, but the image I want to work with is drawn in black ink.

I’m using Photoshop cs on a Windows XP system.

Thanks

Make sure the image is in RGB and not Grayscale. Select the black lines by whatever method is most convenient for you. Using a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer, you can affect the black lines and make them whatever value and color you wish.

Or use the paintbrush. Set the Brush Options in the Tool Option bar to "Screen" and paint over the lines with a new color….You can even change colors in the middle of the operation…Screen mode won’t effect the whites only the black colored lines….Just don’t try to paint with black, you’ll need to switch to "Multiply" to go back and repaint in black…

AH HA!

Thank – you Christine!! That’s what I wanted!!

Thank you both for a super quick reply, but Peter, I must have been missing something with the layer thing cause even after converting to RGB, I was still seeing only black or complete layer wash out to the color I chose.

Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you!
