Can anyone advise me on charging for digital photography. As a studio I am having more and more clients wanting me to put photos on a disk or email them in addition to the Hard Copies they are purchasing. Do you have a straight percentage to add or does it depend on the resolution? Any suggestions is appreciated.

All I know is that when I was in France (all over) I was quoted rates of
1.50 to 18 Euros to have digital photos put on a disk. The 1.5 was a
computer geek, the 18 was in a real touristy local. It may sound strange to give you European rates, but I find the same kind kind of pricing in the USA. You should check out your tough USA competion, COSTCO

artphotog:

You might get more specific answers if you tell us what kind of photographs these are. Wedding, commercial or just copies of your stock?

Some photographers charge separately for CD burning and image retrieval for stock images.

Some wedding photographers include the CD with the packages (copyright of course another issue).

Give us more info!

Here is a reply to Bill’s and Colorfuls questions. The resolution is usually 180 dpi on an 8×10 image, along with an email size suitable for use on their web site and maybe powerpoint. I do commercial, Aerial, and portraits. It is the aerial and business portraits that usually get request this.

Thanks for the help.

In our studio every client is given a copy of their images on a CD, but we run a action that puts a watermark on all of them. That CD is no charge, if they want their images we put them into a slideshow using "Pictures to EXE" so they cannot print them out which would violate the copyright. The Proof CD is also a Slideshow. We charge $50 for the CD that doesnt have the watermark.

I was also wondering do you send all of your images to a lab to get back 5×5 proofs on film paper?

How does the watermark work or slideshow pictures to EXE work?

I try not to do paper proofs. One of the reasons for going digital was I was having to many folks oooh and aaah when they came in to look at proofs then put a deposit down to take them home to show their spouse only to comeback and say we will have to order later something came up and we can’t afford it right now. You know they went home and scanned them.
