CRT vs flat panel display

I am considering a new system (tower and monitor) for my advanced amateur PS work, but the budget is tight. I have a fairly good eye for color.

I have read recently that the CRT is still best for color rendition.

If I am not going the extra mile by getting into screen calibration systems, etc., is the flat panel display color that much off or is this just an issue for the professional?

Do you prefer a CRT or FPD?
Do you get into color calibration?

I asked this question a few months back in the Adobe forum to be told that this subject had been done to death over the last few years. (you can search the archives) The general consensus being that £ for £ or $ for $ you get more for your money with a CRT as opposed to the "flats"

I do all mine on an EIZO 19" CRT and when I take the same images into class and view them on their flat screens, the quality is awful, either too dark or too pale, some subjects even showing a colour cast. OK, so they are not the most expensive flat screens available as they came bundled with the PC’s.

Apparently it is possible to get a similar quality with a flat screen but you will pay a lot more for the privilege. ISTR that a very expensive Sony SDM-X202 (£1250!!!!!) was the darling of the moment, but good things have also been written about the EIZOL885 (Just under £1000).

Someone suggested auditioning, which sounds like the best way to go. Unfortunately I am in a small market and am limited to Costco, OfficeMax and WalMart for local suppliers.

Glad to help, as an aside, one interesting idea I picked from the hundreds of posting I saw on the subject was how some users were using a dual flat screen monitor set-up, one in landscape orientation and one portrait.
Very nice if you have the space and the funds. 😉

I have been so happy with my Sony Trinitron 19 inch CRT. When I bring work to school on their LCD the stuff is too bright. That has been my experience in general with LCD.
