Once upon a time there was a tutorial online which I can’t currently find. Re-entering the PS waters. 😉

Anyway what I want is the ability to place a person with a new background. However, I want to keep the details of the hair…the fly-away strands. This tutorial I mentioned encorporated the use of the dodge tool. I can’t get the results I want.

Any suggestions or links would greatly be appreciate.

Susan,

You’ve picked a good one;-)
I tend to stick to Kojak types or Mr Brinner, but there is a tutorial for download at the folowing link,
http://www.shanzcan.com/photoshop/channelmask_tut.zip

this uses channel masks, never seen one that uses the dodge tool, seen one that used the background eraser and extract though.

Mike,
The tutorial is wonderful! Thank you!

I always ending up biting off more than I can chew at the beginning of a project. ;-0

If the hair is differently colored than the current
background, all you need to do is use the extract tool, with the "force foreground" option checked. If not, then modify the hair with the dodge tool so it stands out enough, select the background without selecting the hair, delete the background, and paste the new background into the picture with the "paste into" command.

Susan,

Try this link: http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html

Scroll down to the PS 7 stuff and look for "Advanced Masking

Old stuff that’s NEW!"

"Dr" Brown uses the dodge tool in this for masking.

There is a bunch of useful stuff at that link.

Hope this helps,
Dave
