I have and illustration that I want to use for a 2 color job, Pantatone 185 and black. I have no trouble creating a duotone but what I want is to have elements of the illustration in black and white eg. a candy cane with a red bow. The candy cane to be black and white while the bow is a duotone. Can this be done in photoshop?

Select the objects you want to be a specific color and copy them to a new layer.

In a duo/tri-/whatevertone document the tonal "mapping" is the same across all the layers.

Might I recommend a Multichannel image (needs to be saved as DCS 2.0), where Stan might work on the individual color*channels* (two channels: black and Pantone 185 red). "Paint" the Pantone 185 channel "white" where you don’t want no Pantone 185; and adjust curves (Ctrl + M) on the black and the ‘185 channels for getting a duotone-like effect where you want your candy red/black (curves instead of duotone transfer curves).

In any multichannel image’s channel, white is no color, black is color. When your DCS has two channels (black and PMS 185), your printer will set up two screens (black and PMS 185).

As far as I know, you’d use a duotone when you want a grayscale image enhanced with a second color in its *entirety* – but I’m eager to learn, since I don’t know much on this matter.

Cheers,
Fred
