In PhotoShop CS2 there is a choice of 4 different printer profiles for Canon i9900:

Canon i9900 MP1
Canon i9900 SP1
Canon i9900 PR1, and
Canon i9900 PR2

How are these profiles different from each other?

Welcome to Canon color management hell.
MP1 (Matte Photo Paper)
PR1 (Photo Paper Pro)
PR2 (Photo Paper Pro)
SP1 (Photo Paper Plus Gloss)
Is there some reason Canon could not name the papers directly? Epson names their surfaces directly, and they have many more available than Canon. It gets worse.
I suggest you email Canon for their instructions on using Photoshop color management with their printers. The procedures are not intuitive. I could post them here but the effort of getting this information from Canon is in itself instructive.
Alas the instructions do not work very well.
In fact, Canon color management as implemented in its drivers basically stinks.
Then I suggest you abandon the effort and buy a Monaco Optix/EX Color bundle (or better, if you can afford it) and create your own paper/printer profiles. This will be absolutely necessary if you ever plan to try color management-and have it be reliable- with anything other than the 3 Canon paper surfaces (glossy, matte or plain paper).
The canned Canon profiles are not very accurate even for their own paper surfaces.
Canon printers however are capable of excellent results so I would not give up on the printer.

Thanks for the info, birdman. I called Canon tech support for the i9900, since it’s still under warranty, and he told me that :"It’s a PhotoShop issue!!" The only printer they recommend is CNBJPRN#2, which is used by Canon’s EZPhotoprint. I’m beginning to think that I bought the wrong printer. You’re right, it just is not as easy to understand as Epson in terms of printer and paper profiles. But I do like the print results though.
