hanging problem in CS

has anyone had this?

after working in PS for a bit you lose the ability to select features and keyboard shortcuts stop working,
Ex: you choose ‘File’ and none of the ‘subcatagories’ (New, Save, Browse, etc.) appear.
Ex2: none of the menus will appear when you hit the upper right arrow button in the Layers, Channels, etc.
Ex3: no keyboard shortcuts, such as Cntrl+S work (Ouch!)

Essentially you lose all work unsaved up to that point.

This happens with large files and small files.– However, it is not a total hang or freeze: you can still continue to do whatever you were doing Ex: you can still paint with a brush.

I am using Photoshop CS on Win XP professional on a dual processor, beefy memory machine.
Just recently upgraded from PS 7– which was the most stable program i ever owned, so i am pretty sure it is not my system at fault.

Any suggestions? Mucho thanks in advance.

I have had exactly the same problem. After wasting a bunch of time with Photoshop support, I got smarter (maybe not by much) and wandered through the newsgroups for Photoshop [like this one] and the support pages at Adobe. I suspect it is actually a ‘feature’ — there is an option in Photoshop to limit how much memory CS and CS2 take. Much to my surprise, this error can be surpressed by gradually reducing the amount of memory — in my case the optimum is around 80%. My guess is that there are some sideeffects of their new product architecture that just does not take kindly to being paged out — anyhow, Adobe is being real quiet about it, and their support staff routinely blame your machine, but the fact that the top level menus respond to mouse movements show that the program is getting the messages from window and then loosing them.
Oh, about the edit session that you were in when the problem occured — its gone, sorry. You have to crash it (kill from task manager) then restart. Adjust your memory requirements, then restart again, then resume editing — it may work better now.
