I’m new to photoshop, have done some minor photo editing with other programs and want to learn the ins and outs of photoshop. Currently I’ve been taking some photos and short video clips (with regular digital camera so no sound) of my brother-in-law and his race car. He had a crash Saturday and I managed to catch it on the camera in video mode. He wants a still image that can be printed out…. anybody know how I can get a .jpg or .bmp image still from an .avi video? I’ve been able to stop it while playing in Media Player, but no option to save just that frame. Can Photoshop do this or can someone recommend another program that will let me do it? He really wanted to print a photo of it Saturday, but we found out those Wal-mart machines don’t read avi’s. Any help appreciated… thanks.

Try e.g. Media Player Classic:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/

Just pause the movie and then "File" > "Save Image".

Pause the movie at the frame you like. Press Ctrl+PrtScreen (assuming you have a PC, dunno about the Mac). Go to Photoshop, press Ctrl+N and press Enter when the dialog box pops up. Press Ctrl+V.

Make the movie player the active window, and do ALT+PrtScreen to capture just the movie window. Repeat the rest of Waldo’s steps. That should work most of the time. If however, you see a black screen where the movie still should be, change the screen settings (of your desktop). Change the color depth to a lower value. Restart the movie and try the above.
