Hello,
I am trying to install CS2 tryout in my system (XP Professional), but keep getting the following message from the PS installer:
"This copy of Windows XP has no service pack installed…CS2 is designed to run on Windows XP service pack 1 and above"
I went to the microsoft update page ( http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx? ln=en-us), followed all the directions, downloaded everything MS update page tells me, restarted my system, tried to install CS2 again, but I keep getting the same message: "This copy of Windows XP has no service pack installed."
I would appreciate your help because even if CS2 gets installed, it does not run on my machine. Thanks!

It says:
microsoft windows xp

but the fourth line is missing. It does not say service pack 2 or 1 thanks!

Using IE
I go to:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx> Click on:
Download SP2 from Microsoft Update
On the page Keep your computer up to date, I click on "express" (it says recommended) for the express update
On the next page, Review and Install Updates, next to "install updates" it says: Download size (total): 0 KB *
Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes *
(*Downloaded; ready to install)
This means to me that there is nothing to update. I have actually gone through this twice. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!

this link (ie only) will allow you to dl sp 2 then run it locally:

Hello,
Thanks for your help.
I am not sure if I am being clear. What I am trying to say is that I have always kept up with MS automatic updates; this is, I guess, why when I go the MS update page, after my system gets inspected, I get:
Download size (total): 0 KB *
Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes *
Just in case, I run the update again. I restarted my computer, right clicked on My Computer/Properties and still no service pack.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

sounds like the update is screwed somewhere and not being recognized, while the registry key that controls what windows updates are available for you is telling the system it’s already installed. either it is or it’s not, and either the updater is confused, or windows itself it.

that’s why i suggested dl’ing the full version and just running the full sp2 update from your hard drive.

Dave,
Sorry but I don’t know how to do this.
"that’s why i suggested dl’ing the full version and just running the full sp2 update from your hard drive."
Could you please explain?
Thanks for your help!

in this post (#5):
dave milbut, "Can’t install CS2 tryout" #5, 8 Oct 2005 8:44 am </cgi-bin/webx?14/4>

the link i gave takes you to the download area for sp2, NOT the windows update site. download the (LARGE – 272 meg!!!) file and run it from your hard drive instead of running windows update.

that’s how i downloaded it. then i saved it in case i ever need to reload xp, i don’t need to go through windows update again to get sp2, i have it on disk and burned to a cd.

I think you have to OK the install of a thingy and have pop-ups enabled

Maybe it is a security setting?

On the page Keep your computer up to date, I click on "express" (it says recommended) for the express update

If you click on Custom, what do you get? Express only gives you the "critical" updates/fixes, if I recall correctly.

there’s also a way to reset all updates so you see them all again…
