Photoshop CS user on windows: in the curves dialog box after having used the pencil icon to adjust the curve no matter what I do cannot get back to being able to manipulate the curve. It remains in the pencil mode… double clicking, right clicking makes no difference.

How do I get out of the pencil mode
thanks

What happens when you click on the curves icon to the left of the pencil icon?

Using CS2 here but as far as I can remember, the layout in CS is the same.

By default the Curves dialogue opens in "adjust curve by adding points" mode.

After you have drawn a curve with the pencil, coming out of pencil mode (by clicking the curves icon to the left of the pencil icon) puts you back into "adjust curve by adding points" mode.

The fact you have altered the curve from a straight line, points will have automatically been added to maintain the curve shape.

You can drag these points to further adjust the curve, or you can eliminate an individual point, either by dragging it beyond the edge of the graph or by control-clicking it.

To remove all the points press the Alt key to change the Cancel button into a Reset button.

The Smoothing tool is actually the button marked "Smooth" which only becomes active in pencil mode.

It remains in the pencil mode… double clicking, right clicking makes no difference.

If the dialogue is indeed "stuck" in pencil mode, you will probably need to reset the Preferences file (as detailed in the FAQs).

Hope this helps to clarify matters for you.
