i’m running photoshop CS/Windows 2000 (server edition) on a P4 @ 2.7ghz, i had 512mb of DDR, and had a 128mb graphics card. i have an 80GB internal HD, and an 80GB external HD where i keep all my art, images, and back up files.

photoshop has been running really slow as of lately.

so out goes i to by a new 256mb DDR video card, and another stick of 512DDR. (coincidentally i wanted a new video card to handle my dual monitors as i’ve had 2-19" CRT’s sitting on my desk. i had been wanting to utilize both for a long time now; as well a more efficient workspace was in order.)

so i’m extremely happy with my new, "uncluttered" workstation.

but now, photoshop is still slow, if not slower! this lag occurs opening up the program (tons of fonts/plugins), and mainly when opening and closing images i’m working on. i pull up the task manager and see that photoshop is using 100% of my CPU. this "lag-out" lasts for about 15 seconds while the image is closing. i can open 5 images simultaneously and they all pop up, and i can see them intsantly; i just can’t begin working on any of them for about 15 seconds as the "thinking" cursor is displayed. this happens with any image, no matter the size…from 20kb to 17.2Mb

I read on adobe’s website the FAQ, and a thread on tuning PS. but neither of those things helped. i’ve tried to allow PS to use 75% of my systems memory. i’ve tried lowering and raising the cache levels…i’ve really tried to optimize performance in ever way i can.

now, it should be said that i have like 8,000 fonts, over 200 brush sets, and 133 plugins. is there a way i can access these things from a scratch disk, such as an extermal hard drive? could that free up some system memory usage?

someone please help me get my PS running quicker!

(i posted this earlier on accident in the "web design" area (in a related thread) since then i put all my plug-ins on my removable as a scratch disk. that cut the lag time into less than half the original 15 seconds to 6 seconds. i’m trying to put all my fonts into ATM 4.1 and access externally as well.

You really have far too many fonts active. Invest in a font management system and only have loaded the fonts you actually need.

I would hazard a guess that you’ve not gone out and bought 8,000 fonts, so you should also consider the fact that having downloaded them, there are bound to be more than a few pirated fonts, some of which could be dodgy or corrupt. One corrupted font can slow down your entire system.

As for your scratch disk. Having it on an external drive is not a good idea. Photoshop needs its primary scratch to be fast and with several GBs of defragmented free space.

Chris.
