I had Photoshop 7 and got CS2. Can I now uninstall Photoshop 7… or does CS2 use those files as it is an "upgrade"?

You can uninstall 7 without incident. But if I were you, I wouldn’t uninstall 7 until I was absolutely sure you didn’t need any of the features anymore.

What do you mean? I thought CS2 had all the features + more. What could I possibly need from Photoshop 7 now that I have CS2?

Well… a lot has changed since version 7. For instance, you cannot use PSCS+ to scan in some U.S. Currency. If you have a job/issue/desire to do so, you will have to use Ver 7 and below, or, find another way.

Also, you may find differences, possibly referred to as improvements in how CS/CS2 does certain things, like importing or placing certain kinds of images.

In addition, there are some batch issues (automation) that have changed for the worse (something was overlooked), that won’t be fixed until next version.

Is that it? I dunno. Point is, unless you’re hurtin desperately for HD space, it’s a good idea to keep 7 on until you are certain that you won’t use it. If you absolutely positively have to get something done, and you can’t do it in CS2, for whatever reason, you probably want 7 on.

That’s my opinion. <shrug>

Thanks. I didn’t know quite what you ment but now I see.

As you said; yes I am hurting for HD space. I barley have enough to have windows run smoothly. That extra 100mb looks awefly big in my position. My laptop has a 10gb HD (well more like 9 formatted) and windows (well windows and all my nesecary programs) take something around 5-7gb. That leaves me with about 2 gb -less now with CS2- to work.
I just had to move all my media stuff like music over to my iPod (before that I was down to 200mb free space), which I use as storage because I can’t really do anything else with it since my laptop doesn’t have highspeed usb ports.

Anyway.

Thanks again, I guess I’ll bare with it and keep PS 7 just in case =)

Ah. Well, it all depends on the kind of work you expect to do. If you’re that low on space, well… you’ll sort it out.

One can’t be sure without knowing more about your laptop but I would say that you would be pushing it beyond its capabilities running CS2.

What are the specs – ie processor, RAM, etc?

You can buy PCMCIA cards to upgrade to USB 2.0 by the way.

In Photoshop CS it is possible to apply an action to unopened files using the automate function. You first select the files you want to manipulate in the browser. With CS2 it seems that these files need to be opened first before they can be dealt with in this way. I think this is a retrograde step or I am missing something. Does anyone know whether it is possible to do this in CS2??

Way off topic here Grenville. Post again starting a new thread and you’ll get some answers.

David:

Because of the way CS2 uses memory and relys heavily on the scratch disk, you should aim to keep several GBs free just for the temporary files Photoshop creates whilst you are working.

Hang on to PS7 because on that machine my guess is that CS2 will very quickly grind to a halt.
