Unable to "Cut" or "Layer Via Cut"

Using PS 6.0, there are some tiff files that I am unable to cut using the Marquee Tool. The Edit menu doesn’t illuminate the "Cut" menu item. Right clicking doesn’t illuminate the "Layer Via Cut" option. What am I missing here?

are you trying to cut from a locked background?

Is the TIFF file 16-bit/channel?

If so, you’ll need to drop it to 8 bit, because Photoshop 6 doesn’t support multi-layer 16 bit files.

It was the 8 bit / 16 bit conflict. I changed to 8 bit and the problem was resolved. Thanks.
