I keep getting an error while I’m working on PSD files and trying to save them – it says:

"Could not save ‘filename here’ because the file is already in use or was left open."

I’m using Photoshop version 6.0.1

It’s due to a problem with psicon.dll, the file which creates the thumbnail you see in Windows Explorer. Do a search for it and rename it to see if the problem goes away.

Downside is you won’t be able to see the thumbnails in Explorer any more. Adobe removed it in CS and CS2 because of the problems it was causing – so you’ll be in good company!

I think that did the trick! Thank you.

More correctly: it is a problem with the Windows OS APIs for adding shell extensions for document thumbnails, and psicon.dll tried to use those APIs and exposed the problems in the OS. That is why Adobe stopped using psicon.dll in later versions of Photoshop.
