I’m struggling around in the dark and I’m hoping someone can turn on a lightbulb for me. 🙂

My daughter got married, the photographer used a Nikon D2X. What do I need to process these images with Photoshop. I bought Nikon Capture buts its stunningly slow. I downloaded Nikon View understanding that that would install a plugin for PS but it didn’t and the NEF files still don’t load.

I’m using CS2.

HELP!

Thanks! 🙂

You need to update the Adobe Camera RAW plugin – just make sure you follow the instructions for installation correctly.

Utoh, this was fine until I rebooted. Now I’ve got the "wrong document" messages back again! I removed nknvmon.exe from Startup and rebooted but still the same problem.

Anyone have an idea where else should I look for Nikon plugins?

Look in your plugins directory and the directory where PSCS2 keeps the camera raw plugin (this is under c:\program files\common files\adobe somewhere). Also, reset your file association for .NEF files to Photoshop CS2.

Weird, it was a problem with one file only. It just happened to be the one I tried first.

Thanks! 🙂

Looks like you may have solved the problem already, but a couple of comments anyway.

Nikon Capture is slow, but there is a batch mode that you can use to convert an entire directory at once to (for example) JPEGs. Start it running and go an do something else.

On CS2, the Nikon plug-in will get installed by default as "Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats\NEF Plugin.8Bi".

The lastest version of the Adobe Camera Raw plug in will do the job without the need for Nikon Capture. You will need to download the most recent version from the Adobe Web site. It is stored as "Program Files\Common\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS2\File Formats\Camera Raw.8BI".

I have Nikon Capture, but I prefer the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in. Once you install Nikon Capture or Nikon View, you have to remove the Nikon plugin to un-hide the Adobe plug-in. A very easy way to do this is to rename the Nikon plug-in to something like "NEF Plugin.8Bi.save" and restart Photoshop. If you decide later that you prefer the Nikon plugin, you can just remove the extra file extension.

The Nikon plug-ins will be in the Photoshop plug-ins folder, Photoshop Only/File Formats if I remember correctly. And they get reinstalled every time you upgrade Nikon View or Capture, which gets really irritating.
