I’m attempting to crop numerous large files (2.91 MP JPG) into a standardized size for printing. Ideally, I’d like to create a crop preset to 2.5 x 3.5 inches, for example. If I understand correctly, though, this will necessitate resampling of the image, which is undesireable. My final image needs to print at a small size but with a high resolution (at least 300 ppi).

I will not be printing these images myself; they are to be submitted for publication.

I’ve read thru the info here & I am still confused as to what I can do with the Crop Tool, and what I will then be able to do in the Image Size menu – or should do. Need I even be concerned about resampling, if I am converting such a big file to such a small one?

Thanks…

(2.91 MP JPG)

First off, be aware that every time you open and resave a Jpeg, quality is irrevocably lost. Better to work on a lossless format such as TIFF.

My final image needs to print at a small size but with a high resolution (at least 300 ppi).

Create an action to:
1/ set the resolution to 300ppi – with "Resample Image" UNchecked. 2/ change the size of the image using "Fit Image" (under the Edit>Automate menu)

Then run the action via the Batch command on all the images in your source folder.

"Fit Image" will create a uniform size from originals of varying size and orientation.

Hope this helps

Chris – thanks. I should have stated more clearly, though, that the area that I need to crop & save is not the same on all photos. That’s why I hoped that I could work with the Crop or Marquee tool.

If I don’t use a tool to preset a crop size, and I crop an area that is a rectangle wider than I really want, then I use fit image and the print size displays at, say, my desired 750 by 1050 pixels. However – the document is not the right 2.5 by 3.5 size shape that I need. Does that make any sense?

Essentially, I want to crop a certain size shape out of each large file, and save it as @ at least a 300 ppi TIFF. Each file should print out at the same shape & resolution.

Thanks again…

In the Crop tool Option bar, choose the height and width you want. Leave the resolution box empty.

After cropping, go to image size. If the resolution is less than 300 ppi, then you will need to rescan (or live with it as it is, or resample up, though that will not give you more detail) if it is more than 300 ppi, then you may want to resample down.

Using the Crop Tool, set 750 x1050 and 300ppi in the options bar to resize and set the resolution at the same time.

No point in trying to incorporate this into an action however, as you need to attend to each file individually. Just "Save As" to your new location. Job done.
