Does anyone know of a place I can find an action to download for a burned edge? I downloaded "Z(burnt edge)" from the Adobe Studio Exchange and can’t get it to work. Thank you.

I have that action and it works fine for me.

What version of PS are you using?

Describe the problem you’re having (specific error message) and perhaps I (or someone else) can help.

I use CS2 with XP Pro and there are no error messages. It goes thru the steps as if it is working with not error messages, but the final result only shows four little brown spots on the corners of the photos. Does the background need to be a layer? Does it matter what the file format is?

File format should not make a difference.

Under PS 7.0 I tried it on
* A Background-only image
* An image with no Background (Layer 1 only)
* One with resolution = 72 ppi
* Another with resolution = 300 ppi

In all cases it worked fine, that is, pretty decent looking "burned edges" were created.

That said…
* This action has been around awhile, so there’s a possibility it was was written and tested in a version of Photoshop before CS.
* So what? Adobe implemented a couple subtle changes in layer handling starting with CS. So, it’s possible that although the action runs to completion w/o error under CS2, the CS results aren’t the same as those one would get in PS7 or PS6.

If I had CS2 installed, I’d be glad to troubleshoot it further, but alas, I’ve not taken that leap yet. I know someone with CS2 who would probably be able to give this a shot. I’ll send him the action and see what he says.

Check back in a couple days. I’ll post his findings when he replies to my e-mail.

I ran it on CS2, and it ran fine. I only had a problem when the image I tried it on already had a channel called Alpha 1, because the action uses Alpha one to create the burnt edge mask.

After running the action, use your history palette with the channels palette visible and step through the history to watch what happens. The spotting you report sounds like it may have to do with one of the selection steps in the alpha 1 or alpha 2 channels because they both have the cloud filter applied, but you’ll have to see.

That’s they only way I can think of troubleshooting it. Once you see where it’s having a problem, you can tweak that step, if necessary.

But it works fine on CS2.

(thanks, tony)

I got a reply (already) from my CS2 user pal, who reported no problems. It rendered the effect he expected on images of varying characteristics.

So, I’d recommend Tony’s advice on this.
