Actions run slowly on one machine but not another

I have PSCS2 installed on my desktop machine and on my laptop. Both run WinXP SP2, both machines are fully updated with the latest software (both Win and PS), and both are screamers with tons of RAM and disk. Yet on the desktop machine, PS actions run very slowly. For instance, Drop Shadow Frame takes 17 seconds on the desktop, 2.5 seconds on the laptop. If I open the action and watch its progress, the steps run at an absolutely even rate of about two per second, as though something was carefully regulating its execution rate. Yet the Playback Options are set to Accelerated on both machines. I tried turning off Pause For Audio Annotation, whatever that is, but nothing changed.

Furthermore, if I click on an action, it takes about half a second just to highlight, but nearly zero on the laptop. The same isn’t true, say, of history items, layers or channels: they highlight quickly on both machines. So the problem really seems to pertain primarily to actions.

The Task Manager shows nothing else sucking up CPU time. No other software is responding slowly. The rest of PS seems a tad slow, but not by 7:1, so it could be other unrelated factors (e.g., video card). But the slowness of actions is quite stunning, and needs explanation. Actually, it needs to be fixed. Any ideas?

Is it possible it’s a video update issue?

Also, I notice periods where the same action on a main machine will fly, or dog – no reason. Rebooting clears it for a while.

In CS2 I also notice strange palette redraw behavior on occassion. Especially when running actions – my entire history palette will be blank, until I perform another activity. It usually happens after running an action as the action palette is docked in the well at the top of the app.

So, I’m telling you this so as to suggest that you might consider video drivers – does it make a difference if you drop vid hardware acceleration to NONE?

That’s all I have to offer, but will be reading with interest.

Peace,
Tony
