Reducing Memory Consumption w/Adjustmnt Layers

Dear folks,

OK, I’m embarrassed; this is one of those "I used to know this" questions.

When I add adjustment layers to an image, Photoshop CS2 reports that the amount of memory I’m using goes up in direct proportion to the number of layers. That is, if the base file is 50 MB, adding one adjustment layer ups that to 100 MB of RAM consumed (according to the info box attached to the image), a second layer takes it to 150 MB, and so on. That’s true regardless of the kind of layer; mostly I use things like curves and hue/saturation tools.

I have this recollection that this is an artifact of one of my preference settings: that if I get those settings adjusted correctly, I don’t eat up huge amounts of additional memory for simple adjustment layers.

Am I remembering correctly? And if so, what do I need to set to stop gobbling up the memory.
