CS2 Error Message when saving files

Occasionally when I save a file in CS2 (regardless of the file format), I get a message coming up saying: "Could not save [File name] because file is already in use or was left open". Normally I just try saving again and it saves with no problem, but today it happened and I lost the whole file. And no, I don’t have the said file open in any other application.

Ideas anyone?

Do you have Bridge running?

Do you have the old psicon.dll installed (from an older version of Photoshop)?

Yes, Bridge is running.
In idiot language – what do I have to do?

Thanks

First, have you updated to Bridge 1.0.2? If not you should – available at: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1 08&platform=Windows

Changing the active folder in Bridge should also stop the file ‘locking’

I’m having the same problem, but have not lost any files, instead, I end up renaming with A, B, etc, and have a gazillion versions of the file. And then at times, I can save over an earlier version with no problems.

But what is Bridge? I searched in my Photoshop Help file and it reports no entry for "bridge".

I’m quite new to PS, so I could use some more specific directions on how to solve this nuisance problem, if that’s possible.

Thanks for your help.

JJ,

Bridge is an application that ships with CS2. It’s sort of a replacement for Windows Explorer – on steroids (Or will be once all the speed problems have been sorted out<g>)

Thanks for the response. I forgot to mention that I have version 8.0, which, I think, is CS(1?), or just CS. Does that mean I do not have Bridge?

In CS you have the file browser, In CS2 you have bridge, which is the bigger brother of file browser, and it runs as a seperate application.

Thanks for the quick response. It explains part of the problem and is appreciated. Do you have any thoughts on what to do about the original problem which is the sometimes error message when saving files? The solutions offered to date have dealt with Bridge.
Appreciate the help!

Jack,

It does indeed.

Jack,

error message when saving files<<

Do a search for psicon.dll and rename to psicon.dll.old. That should sort the problem, the downside being that you will no longer have thumbnails for .PSD files in Windows Explorer

Thanks again, and I will try that. I’ll try to remember to get back after a few tries, cuz the appearance of the error message seems to be somewhat random. But if you don’t get a response from me, just assume that it worked. But first, some other points and questions:

1. In Win Explorer, some psd’s have thumbnails, and some do not. Is this related to the dll and the problem?
2. This may be a stretch, but I have had the same problem with Adobe Premiere video editor. Do you know if that dll is used by other Adobe programs, or does psicon maybe mean PhotoShop Icon?

Again, many, many thanks. I sometimes think that programmers deliberately bury useful tools and tricks to be discovered, so I have to think like my grandsons playing some useless Nintendo game. How simple these things are when the trick is known.

Psicon.dll is a shell extension that allows PSD files to have thumbnails. It was eliminated in PSCS and CS2 because of a bug in the Windows OS that caused files to be "open" so one couldn’t save to them. If your Windows Explorer is showing thumbnails for any PSD files, you undoubtedly have this shell extension at work. Find it, rename it, and you should eliminate the "file open" saving problem but you will also eliminate thumbnails for PSDs.

I believe some other Adobe products ahd similar shell extensions (maybe Illy with ilicon.dll?). Try a search of your C drive (including hidden and system files) for *icon.dll and you should find them.

Jack,

some psd’s have thumbnails, and some do not.<<

Could well be. There is a bug within the Windows Explorer code that psicon.dll exposes, which Microsoft are apparently unwilling to fix. As a result, Adobe are no longer supporting thumbnails within Explorer and the Explorer extensions do not ship with CS2 programs.

Do you know if that dll is used by other Adobe programs, or does
psicon maybe mean PhotoShop Icon?<<

AFAIK, it is only used by Photoshop, but Illustrator versions from 9 to CS had the equivalent .dll, aiicon.dll which suffered from identical problems, so it is entirely possible that Premier has its own eqquivalent .dll.

Thanks very much for that information. Very interesting! And I’ll try the search as you suggest. JJ

Again, many thanks for your help. I did find & rename the dll, and voila, no more save problems (that was really starting to tick me off), but no more thumbnails either, just like you said. That’s too bad, cuz I am very disappointed with the performance of PS’s browser, so I just opened an Explorer Window and dragged files into PS. Oh well, guess I can’t have everything.
