This may sound a little confusing so please bear with me. I am very confused as how to fix this problem.

I have been using Photoshop 6.0 for the longest time and having no problems with printing. I was getting as close to what was on the screen from my prints. I recently got a new computer and decided to get a copy of CS2 and installed that on a new computer. I printed the same photo I had from the old computer using the same printer for reference and it came out much much darker. When I say darker, it was many shades darker and unacceptable.

I thought that it may be my monitor was not calibrated correctly, but first I re-installed version 6.0 on the new computer and printed the photo again and it came out perfectly from what was on the screen to the print. I don’t understand how the same photo looks the same in both CS2 and 6.0 on the monitor, but that CS2 prints so much darker.

I did calibrate the monitor, but it didn’t make much difference. I printed the same photo again after calibrating using CS2 for one and 6.0 for the other with the same results of dark for CS2 and perfect for 6.0.

Please help.

Jimmy,

Take a look at this excellent tutorial from the Ian Lyons site. www.computer-darkroom.com/ps9_print/ps9_print_1.htm

I checked out the site. Is he saying that if I am using an Epson R300 inkjet photo printer and print from the Photoshop CS2 application, the colors will always be off?

Does this mean that I could make all adjustments in Photoshop CS2, but would then have to print from Photoshop 6? I’d like to print directly to from CS2 with what is on the screen as in 6.

No, he’s not saying that at all. Did you read both page 1 and page 3 (page 2 is for Macs)? You need to decide which workflow you will use (Workflow 1 is simpler, workflow 2 gives you more control) and make the appropriate settings in both Photoshop and the printer driver for that workflow.

Ian’s "Workflow 1" lets the printer control color. You set "Let printer manage color" in PSCS2’s print with preview (page 1) and pick appropriate printer color management settings in the driver dialog (page 3).

Ian’s "Workflow 2" is what you use if you want to hand-pick an ICC profile. You set print with preview to "Let PS manage color" and select the appropriate profile for the ink and paper combination (page 1) and then in the driver dialog click on ICM and OFF (page 3).
