how do i duplicate an entire folder with its contents. i tried ctrl J but it does not work.

Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V)

Hold down Alt key (Win) and drag the folder (layer group) somewhere within Layer Palette.

BTW, it’s common rules in CS2. You can duplicate any layers/effects/masks with Alt+Drag.
