hi all!

am sure this IS the one and only place to find help 🙂 the following image needs some smoothing on the left upper half.
(or any other method to reduce the grain)
(image = 7000px width /72dpi)

-> <http://www.markusmooslechner.com/test-total.jpg>

this is a 1024×768 @72 dpi cutout from the grainy area

-> <http://www.markusmooslechner.com/test-detail.jpg>

is there any chance to brush this part up a little to make it fit the rest of the image better ??????

thx 🙂

It’s gonna be tricky?

Clone Stamp tool
reduce opacity and flow then paint in sourced on the blue on the the grainy area may be one way to reduce the effect but…

If the image is composed across several layers it should be really easy limiting an effect to the grainy section either by layer masking and maybe gaussian blur followed by reducing opacity/flow or a similar approach using a selected cut from the containing layer

thx deebs – yet the prob with the clone tool is that the worked over part of the image will be different after the procedure. i NEED to have the design of the image exactly as it is with grain – work on only two layers. inverted source image over source by luminance

You don’t say what version of PS you have, but the Reduce Noice filter was an excellent start…

sorryyyy – using CS 🙂

I didn’t get CS, I went from 7 to CS2, so I can’t say whether or not that filter is there… surely it’s not the only way, though. Frankly, I’m not sure what how far you need to go, so without an example of how it SHOULD look, it’s really hard to advise.

copy that part to a new layer, then apply blur or fav de-sharpening/smoothing technique. then play with the layer opacity and layer modes to see if you that helps.

you can also fade an effect immediately after doing it with crtl-shift-f. or you can snapshot then do your repairs then use the history brush with reduced flow to blend. lots of ways to do something like this. no exact answers possible without knowing exactly what you’re after…

alright – first thanx for your support !!!!!!!!!!!!!
here’s a screenshot:

"1" is the area i would like to smooth so as to make it more similar to "2"

the image is produced from a fractal renderer and should stay that way – that’s why i cannot do a clone-stamp work-over

Wll can’t the fractal thing save as separate object or separate layers? These are a doddle to tweak afterwards.

Otherwise it looks like a tedious application of the blur tool?

Markus, duplicate the background, click q to enter quick mask mode, click on gradient tool, drag from the upper right corner diagonally down and to the left about half way. Click q to leave quick mask. Use a very slight gaussian blur (.3-.9). Don’t know if that will do what you want or not but it does smooth things out in that corner. If you need to have more of the image to be affected, then drag further down and to the left.

You can also use the Median filter, along with the Gaussian Blur. You will not likely get an exact match without also losing detail or sharpness. You can try to recover the sharpness by reselecting the gradient mask and doing some sharpening. You will have to do some judgement here.

Also, perhaps adding some noise to the rest of the image might make it more acceptable.
