if the file has been "flattened" that is, if it has only one background layer and no text layer (see the layers palette. a text layer will have a big capital letter "T" as the layer icon), then you can’t edit the text. if you HAVE to use those files, and can’t get unflattened versions, you may have to resort to using the clone, healing, patch and spot healing tools to erase the text before adding a new text layer.
Hi dave,
Thanks for the quick response. When I looked at the layers, I have a background layer and the text layer. But still I cannot edit the image text. Please let me know the procedure how to edit the text. Usually after opening the psd file I will double click on the text to edit it. But in this one even if I double click on it, nothing is happening. When I try to write some text it is writing on top of it. I can send you the psd file that I have with me if it is ok with you. please let me know.
Thanks,
Sridhar.
sure. if it’s not too big (hopefully less than a meg or 2) zip it up and send it to aikodude at yahoo dot com. make the subject line "trouble with psd text".
dave
Control click on the text layer thumbnail (the one with the T). This should open the text layer and select all of the text.
Hi Dave,
I just send an email to you with the psd file. please look at it.
Thanks,
Sridhar.
hey sridhar, as i suspected, the text is on the background layer. if you turn off or delete the text layer in the psd the text is still there.
the good news is that with that solid color background, it will be simplicity itself to use the clone tool to erase the existing text from the background then just use the text tool to add new text.
Hi Dave,
I am new to adobe photoshop. So I am not sure how to do that. Could you please explain the steps to do that. Or will it be be possible for you to modify the text to "Testimonials" and send the file as an attachment? please let me know.
Thanks,
Sridhar.
very simple. as the background is all one color you should be able to clone out the text very quickly.
select the clone tool (best to check the help file on that – hit f1 and look for the clone tool in the index). basically you hit alt to define the "source" (the area to clone FROM) then when you click to paint the source overwrites the "destination" (the area to clone TO). Just select the background layer in the layer palette. and paint over the letters with the clone tool. then you can type anything you want over your newly blank canvas. make sure you save a copy as psd WITH LAYERS then save an output jpg. use the jpg on the web page, keep the psd with the text layer intact in case you need to change it again, or create another similar banner.
sorry but i don’t have that font so i can’t help you as far as doing it for you, but it’s really easy. try it you’ll see.
Just a note:
Do NOT rasterize type that you’ll need to edit later!
Once the type is rasterized it will no longer be selectable, so you will not be able to edit it later.
Hmmm – this sound like a good reason to keep a copy of the image layer (destination of rasterized text) and the text just in case?
(epseviallally with my typong)
