After installing Photoshop 7.0 in my Windows 98 SE computer, which I have set up as Web Style I lost the ability to view any jpg while placing the mouse pointer over the jpg. All the information regarding name file size still appears in the upper left hand corner of the folder but no image. The only time an image will appear is when it is a psd format. There is no problem opening Photoshop 7.0 when clicking on a jpg or tiff format. Photoshop 7.0 is my first time at using Adobes professional software; in the past, I have used their other photo software. I mention this in case PS 7.0 is suppose to work that way. If not I would like to be able once again to see an image in a Windows Web Style Folder.

If you can’t see a jpg thumbnail, can you see one for a gif or bmp file? If yes, then there may be a Registry key missing or corrupt. Look for following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.jpg/ShellEx/

There should be a sub-key with the following long number as its name: {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00c04FC2D6C1}

If you highlight that key, you should see a long number beginning {7376D… in the Contents Pane to the right. If any of this is missing, that would account for not being able to view a jpg file as a small image.

But if you can’t see gif or bmp images either, then that "7376D…" key may be missing. Or the C:\Windows\System\BROWSEUI.DLL file may be missing or corrupt.

In Web Style, I can see thumbnails of the following gif, bmp and psd but not jpg or tiff formats. I checked out the registry per the instructions and everything was there whether it is corrupted or not how can you tell? The one item I did notice was that ShellEx was located under jpeg not jpg. I am not sure if that was a typo or the cause of my problem. One other item that looks wrong on my computer under View/Folder Options/File Types is that JPEG has listed as its extension JFIF, can that be correct.
