I’ve seen this in movies where there are pictures hung up on a wall and a person edited it to make it look like it was a picture of him and an unlikely person such as JFK or some other famous person. How do you do this step by step? I am a beginner at this Photoshop stuff. I am using Photoshop 7.0 Thanks!

Too complicated for a step by step. A lot of what to do depends on your familiarity with photoshop, the intent of the image, and the source of the images.

That said, you have to select person one, and paste him into image two. Getting them to look perfect is a challenge even for the most seasoned of professionals depending, again, on what source material you have to work with.

It’s called ‘cutting out’ by most people….Grab the pen tool and be prepared for lots of boring, tedious work, that is a huge pain in the arse.

Pen tool?

Aren’t there plenty of more efficient ways to make selections in Photoshop? How can you get a hard and soft edge selection at once with the pen tool?

For ideal compositing, check the manual and Google for ‘Photoshop layer masking’.

David,

It’s not easy. It all depends on the photo itself. One of the ways of doing it is by using the lasso tool and going around the whole person, copy, go to the other photo, paste, hit Ctrl+T, click from the right key of the mouse, hit scale, and make it the right size as you press Shift (to get the object keep the right dimensions), . Then hit Enter… This is about it, except I forgot to tell you that after you’re done with the lasso tool, got to "Selec", choose "Feather" and make it approx. 2… This is only possible if the object can be cirsumscribed entirely.

Another way is by choosing "Filter", "Extract" (But if I remember correctly, for Photoshop 7, it is Windows, Extract). A new window will appear with the photo and object you want to extract in it. You should go to help and look for extract. The whole object of the exercise is to "paint" with a brush around the object and fill this object with a colour. You can check the results and accept the it. Then you proceed as above.

Another way of doing it (not easy) is by cloning with the cloning tool… You open both photos and set them side by side and clone…

Yet another way is with a mask…. look for this in Help

Sorry to be so vague, but you’ll appreciate this is a tall order.

Take care,

Marcel

Wow – nice link Michael – it shows how to get 90% off Adobe software prices (top left hand corner – the add is under the butterfly)

Now I wonder? …
