Does anyone know to create the wavy line (sine wave) above the "n" in the word Espanol? I have to type this word and cannot figure out how to make this wave above the letter.

Thanks, Steve

Are you asking because the font you’re using doesn’t have any "tilde-N" characters?

Or do you not know how to access those types of extended characters in a font that has them coded into its set?

Navigate to your CharMap Accessory through your Start menu.

There you will find the "ALT + ****" codes to access all the special characters coded into an extended font set.

Note that not all fonts contain all characters, and sometimes those extended characters will not match, stylistically, the font family you’re using.

Steve, can’t find the N tilde in my standard Arial but it is in Arial black. Character map shows this character as Alt+0209.
To use, you make sure that the numlock key is depressed and hold the RH Alt key and input the 0209 from the numeric keypad. Trouble is with a text layer active, nothing happened in PS when I tried this. What you can do from within Character map, is copy the letter(s) you need, to the clipboard and paste it (them) onto the active text layer.

Just hold the Alt Key and Type 0209. The moment you release the Alt Key the Ñ is there.

Not on my laptop (in the Clinic) the LH Alt key does nothing, the RH Alt Gr(normally use) just puts a bounding box around the word on the text layer.

Yeh – this can be so.

On a desktop or workstation the technique relies upon the numerical keypad and not alphanumerical combine keys.

If you are really lucky there may be an equivalent "Num Lock" key (a bit like Fn key on a laptop) that temprarily makes alphanumerical keys into numerical ones

The ALT+XXXX where X = 1, … 9 will then work OK

If the laptop doesn’t support such a feature … you may be outa luck 🙁

Deebs,

Deebs, just tried it agaiñ. On the laptop, the "ñumeric keypad " is integrated into the character keys and is therefore a secoñd fuñction. I had to hold the Alt key añd the "Fñ" key together to use the ñumerics.

Accessing those extended characters always has been—and to this day, remains—easier on a Mac.

But that’s not why I use only Macs. I just like spending more $$$ on a system made by a company that’s going to go belly up any second now! Just ask the "experts". They’ll tell you: Apple is doomed!

So, its a good time to buy one then 😉
I have actually thought about getting one just to use on Photoshop, nothing else, no internet, nada.
As my PC fills up with other required applications, getting slower and slower, constantly under attack from ne’er do wells emailing me viruses etc., a mac for PS may be a solution. Are some better than others in this respect?

As with all hadware, the bigger the iron and the beefier the system, the better.

Can you work effectively on the most inexpensive Mac?

Unequivocably, yes.

Would you like it better with a beefier system?

Same answer.

It’s no big deal on a PC, but when you use laptops, they integrate the numeric keypad into the main keyboard that you access with a function key (usually Fn). Even then, they don’t always return the correct ascii or extended ascii information, depending on the mfr of the keyboard.

So… laptops are especially tough.

What about upgrading like PC’s, adding memory, graphics cards or bigger hard drives, faster processors, etc.,. Is this an option with a Mac?

Of course they’re upgradable!

No offense, but have you been hiding under a rock?

Granted, the upgrade options for the Mac Mini, the iMacs and the eMacs are somewhat limited when compared to the G5 towers, but sure. More RAM, bigger hard drives aren’t a problem. Video and sound cards aren’t much of an issue really, because for the market they’re aimed at, right out of the box the stock video cards are plenty robust enough for just about any thing you wanna throw at them, and the audio is pretty much limited only by the software you choose to run.

Sounds like you need to go poke around some Mac sites for more info than I could possibly provide.

None taken, just never considered them before. My son started college recently (using PS on Macs) and I’m getting fed up of him teklling me how he now does things in class. Might just wait for them to go bust and attend the liquidation sale. 😉

Ahhh, OK Mike, I think I get it now. I’m gonna guess you’re somewhere near my age, and you’re just suffering from Windows inertia, perhaps because of using it at a job?

I’ve been an Apple polisher since my brother came back home for a visit with an Apple 2C under his arm. I’ve worked on Windows machines, but no matter how much I tried to make nice with them, they just never seemd "right" to me.

The rest is history.
