I need to replace my printer, HP DeskJet 5550, because of some minor broken plastic parts. I print quite a bit of text and occasional photos. Most of my photo printing is done by a printing service, but from time to time I want some good quality prints at home. Can anyone recommend a printer that will meet my needs. A switch or other way to change between text printing and photo printing rather than changing cartridges would be a plus.

Thanks,
John

Let me first say that I am not an expert. I read the forum all the time because I love to use photoshop and I learn so much from the real "experts" and their advise. Anyway, I have a Canon i560s desktop printer that I use for printing pictures, mostly 4×6. My son has one that he uses for all of his printing, pictures and text. The model number has changed to the Canon PIXMA iP4000 Photo Printer (around $99 on Amazon). It prints what I think are absolutely perfect color pictures. I also use the Canon "Photo Paper Plus Glossy" paper. I can’t find any paper that compares. Hope this helps.

John…

No matter which manufacturer you go with, make sure that it’s a printer which uses separate cartridges for each color of ink, as opposed to just one black, and one combined tricolor tank.

Inks is expensive enough; there’s no sense having to replace a tricolor cartridge because you ran the yellow tank dry printing pictures of a field of daffodils!

I went with the Canon ip8500.
It is great if you don’t need 11×14.
