CS Random hanging and/or crashing

I can’t figure out why CS is hanging/crashing. I can’t seem to get it to crash using any specific tool consistently. It usually crashes while I’m painting images, but has hung and crashed while selecting several different tools including the smudge ool, blur tool, and paintbrush. It has also crashed while changing the brush size and softness.

Sometimes it hangs after 2 minutes and must be reset, other times it lasts for 15 minutes, the longest it went for was an hour. The file sizes its crashed on were as large as 160mb and as small as 700kb. There seems to be no correlation to workable time, as the 700kb file crashed within 10 minutes and the 160mb file crashed several times ranging from an hour apart to 2 minutes.
