as you pass over the orbs there is a flare affect. I would like to use this on my website, but unsure about how to do it. I haven’t played with Image ready that much. I don’t really learn from reading manuals, is there any good tutorials online, perhaphs some videos?

I’ve no idea about how to do this either, but I do notice that is a Flash presentation, to the effect may be unique to capabilities provided by using Flash.

It certainly gives credence to the rumours that computers will be mainstream entertainment/video providers.

Maybe it’s just old techniques with updated image qualities?

The flare effect on the buttons could definitely be done with ImageReady, but you’d run into one big problem: Only GIFs can have animation, but they’re limited to just one level of transparency – those lens flares have multiple levels of transluesency, which is why it would be best to do it in flash.

The attraction effect to the buttons could be done using Actionscript and a class applied to a single "firefly" in flash. The class would control the behavior of one of the "fireflies" – just duplicate the fireflies to have as many as you want. Just let it randomly move around the screen until a button is moused over, and then have the firefly move around it. It’s actually pretty basic actionscript, but used to good effect.

So if I am understanding you all correctly, if this was to be attempted it should be done in flash , but would be a waste of time because it is hokey..???

flash? hokey? uh-uh

The technique is basic but the sophistication looks to be in the flying spots?

one of the responders said that this affect would be hokey to use on a site, I thought it was pretty cool, but I am a sci-fi geek so if it blinks, flashes or is a lightsaber I am entertained.
if you get a chance to go to the link, what do you guys think about the layout of the site page? ( i like it)

I think what Phos is saying is that that sort of thing is very striking initially but, after a couple of visits to a web site with such impressive hokey pokey, you wish they hadn’t bothered, because it is simply impeding the passing of information for the sake of visual effects (which are actually easy to do once you know how).

Unlesss they are there for purely artistic purposes, web sites are there to transmit information, not just to make you go "Wow!".

Some Flash is indeed hokey, some is appropriate given the context. I think the OP’s original link is appropriate for the content. That’s not a site you’re going to visit daily, so you wouldn’t have to put up with stuff that gets old soon. It’s just eye candy and cool for, yes, about five minutes.

I would not try this in Javascript or gif animation. This is what Flash was born to do.
