My eyedropper tool used to work fine. I could click it on the exact color I wanted within an image and that would become the foreground color. I could then switch to brushes and paint over, say, a rust spot on an old print that I had scanned into CS.

But now, the only color the eyedropper provides is an off white. I can click it on blue, black, purple, yellow, whatever, and all I get is off white. Yeeeks. What has my stupid self done now????

Margaret,

Your not in quickmask mode are you?

Thanks very much for your suggestion. I was in quickmask mode, but I got out of it. I was then able to pick up colors with the eyedropper and the foreground color would change according to what I had clicked on with the eyedropper.

However, when I attempted to paint with the foreground color with a brush, all I would get is the damned off white!

The off white always seems to be the background color. Even clicking on the arrow to switch the foreground and background colors produces the same off white color with the brush. Go figure!

Margaret,

What painting mode are you in? Should you be in "Normal"? What happens to the off white bg colour when you press "D" on the keyboard? Does it lighten?
When you double click the off white bg icon and start the color picker dialogue box, what values are displayed in the RGB and hex boxes? They should be all 255 and hex ffffff. If they are you could have a problem with your display setting, maybe re the contrast/brightness settings. How old is it?
