Does anyone know if there is a way once you have attached text to a path to remove the path. That is make it so the text no longer follows a path.

I can’t find a way. So if you need the text, presumably you don’t want it to follow a path anymore, so simply double click on the text/path layer, copy it to clipboard, create a new layer, use the text to to initiate a text entry, and then paste (or just type it again).

You could rasterize it, but then the text isn’t editable.

TMH,

I think the process for putting text on a path is usually to create the path first, then add text. If that’s true, the history palette would be of limited value, I think.
