I would like to use a separate monitor for just the image alone and everything else on another monitor. However, before I spend the money for another monitor and video card, could someone tell me if this can be done?
Also, are there any inexpensive video cards that support two CRT monitors? I am a hobbyist — not a professional graphics professional and so I want to minimize my costs. I would appreciate all comments on the use of dual monitors.
Thanks everybody

Yes a Matrox G550/650 will do the job quite well and inexpensively.

Like ID said the Matrox G550 (I have that one myself) is a great choice. But, for the most flexibility you will want CS2. With versions prior to CS2 you had to expand the Photoshop window over on to the second screen in order to place an image window on it. You could move the palettes and stuff to it without having to expand the Photoshop window. However, with CS2 you no longer have to worry about expanding the window. You can place image windows on either monitor with no problems.

What would be a good place to read reviews for video cards?

Once you’ve worked on a dual monitor setup you’ll never look back. If cost is a factor, look out for a second-hand 15" monitor. Keep all the tools and palette on this second monitor, leaving your main – colour managed – monitor for the image.

Everyone has their own way of customizing a dual screen setup and, as has already been stated, CS2 gives you the most freedom. Here’s one way of doing it, showing the new "roll up" window on the left which allows your desktop to be viewed behind any open images.

Matrox is the best you can get for non-gamming. If you want something that does both gaming and regular application work that is also dual monitor you will end up with a card that doesn’t do anything really well.

As for reviews check Cnet and some of the other review sites.
