Hello,

I’ve scanned a lot of slides, and they have a black border. Due to the amount of images I’m looking for a method or plugin to automatically crop the picture part to use it in batch. Could anybody help me ?

Thank you in advance ..

create an action with the crop tool. Then apply this action to a batch.

To create a new action:

1. Open a file.
2. In the Actions palette, click the New Action button New button, or choose New Action from the Actions palette menu.
3. Enter a name for the action.
4. (Photoshop) Choose a set from the pop-up menu.
5. If desired, set one or both of the following options: * Assign a keyboard shortcut to the action. You can choose any combination of a Function key, the Ctrl key (Windows) or Command key (Mac OS), and the Shift key (for example, Ctrl+Shift+F3), with these exceptions: In Windows, you cannot use the F1 key, nor can you use F4 or F6 with the Ctrl key.
* (Photoshop) Assign a color for display in Button Mode. 6. Click Record. The Record button in the Actions palette turns red Record button (red) .

Important: When recording the Save As command, do not change the filename. If you enter a new filename, Photoshop records the filename and uses that filename each time you run the action. Before saving, if you navigate to a different folder, you can specify a different location without having to specify a filename.
7. Choose the commands, and perform the operations you want to record.
8. To stop recording, either click the Stop button, choose Stop Recording from the Actions palette menu, or press the Escape key. To resume recording in the same action, choose Start Recording from the Actions palette menu.

Hi,

this is the batch part. The other part is the crop itself. I’m using Photoshop 6.0 (German version, so I have to translate). I choose image (or similar menu)->crop (or similar menu) than a popup appears with the options ‘color pixel top left’ or ‘color pixel bottom right’ and checkboxes for remove ‘top’, ‘bottom’, ‘left’, ‘right’ but this doesn’t have any visible effect.

this doesn’t have any visible effect.

That’s probably because there is variation in colour in the black border (in other words, there is more than one black present)

It is most likely that there are different variations of black colours. But how could I choose them with some tolerance and get a rectangular selection ?
And many thanks for the hint to the german community. I started this thread here, so I will still continue it. Perhaps I should open one in German, too.

If you are selecting by colour it will be difficult to find a tolerance setting (even with "Contiguous" set) that gives a perfectly rectangular selection. Many transparency images have rounded corners anyway.

If, in the action, you saved to a new folder (ie left the originals intact) you could make a rectangular crop which excluded a bit more than just the black to ensure it was removed from every image (assuming the orientation was the same).

You could then quickly check the results and revisit any images where the crop was not quite right. Or change the dimensions in the action and re-run it.
