Just recently, when I use Save As to save a new file, it creates it as "all formats" instead of PSD, even though PSD was selected. Then it refuses to open it. It will not allow me to change it and I can’t find a way to make it stop doing this. This started after I created a jpeg 16 bit file. I have checked and I am currently in 8 bit.

Try resetting the Preferences file (as detailed in the FAQs).

I checked that. The only option available there is whether or not to use caps in the extension. I do have further info. If I create a new file and make a change on it, then the "save" option is available in addition to "save as". If I click on "save" it comes up with "untitled" in the name box. If I try to change the name, it changes the file extension. If I click the save box without changing the name, it saves it as a PSD and takes me back to the main screen. Then I can click on file-open and right click on the untitled file and click on rename. Then it takes me back to the main screen where the file is still showing "untitled" in the title bar. I close this. I go back to file-open and my file is there with the correct name and the "untitled" one is gone. Needless to say, this workaround is very cumbersome and time consuming. Apparently, something in the nameing process is haywire.

I checked that.

You misunderstood Chris’ post. Go to the faq and execute the procedure listed there for resetting your Photoshop Preferences.

Peace,

I tryed to, but I was unable to find either "tweak ui" or "common dialogs". I don’t know where to go to find them.
On a happier note, this started when I created a file that I saved as a jpeg to send as an e-mail attachment. My wife asked, "Why not just delete that file?" I did and the problem has gone away. I would still like to know where the stuff mentioned in the FAQ is at though.

Thanks,

Mike

You’re looking at the faq at the top of the forum right? You don’t see anything about preferences?

I did read that one, but it is way out of my league. There may be some underlying problem there, but since deleting that file solved my current problem, I’ll leave well enough alone. Thanks for the help.

but it is way out of my league

It’s really quite a simple procedure. Many, many problems have been resolved with the "three fingered salute". I tend to reset mine every month or so "just in case" – along with defragging, deleting .TMP files, etc.

Anyway, glad you’ve got the problem fixed. But bear it in mind for the future.

Chris.
