OK. I guess this is a simple question but we’ll see. I want to make an .EPS with a transparent background for an image that has a drop shadow. I want the drop shadow to have transparency as well so that when placed in InDesign I can put in over anything and have it under image show through.

Does this make sense? Does anyone know how to do this? I have tried straight saving as EPS and also used the ‘export transparent image…’ wizard under Help in Photoshop. Both did not work.

I think I know my problem. EPSs cannot have translucency or soft, feathered transparency. It is TIFF with transparency. Of course if I am wrong please let me know.

Actually it depends on the program you are placing the item in. In Quark 6 transparency is either on or off. You cannot do a soft feathered edge unless you matte the drop shadow to a color matching the background and then place the entire square box.

In InDesign however, go ahead make that nice feathered transparency with an outer glow and a drop shadow (ok overboard…used for dramatic effect only) and drum roll please……place the file as a native psd which will preserve the transparent effects.

Tiffs do have the option of saving transparency, however, the application you are bringing the tiff into must be able to read the transparency. Outdated programs like Quark cannot "read" the transparency in a tiff, and will place a white background behind your tiff file. The only way to remove it is to use Quark’s rather lame Non White area clipping path feature or to use an EPS with an embedded clipping path created in Photoshop. However, EPS will not preserve the smooth transition to transparency of a drop shadow.

Basically if you use Quark, be prepared to forgo all of the Photoshop bells and whistles if you cannot matte to white in your document…

As you are using InDesign, Just Place the PSD – no need to use .EPS at all
