Epson R 800 manual says that Photoshop under color settings should be set to US Prepress Defaults, yet when I do that the photo printing is dark and the colors are not at all like the actual photo, I then went back to the default ‘web graphics default’ and the colors are not as dark and it is more similiar to the photo. any advice on these settings is welcome. 2nd when you click ‘print’ what is the best setting under ‘profile and intent’,lastly under properties ‘photo enhance’-which gives me better color than ICM and no color adjustment. It appears to be backwards from the users guide for the printer. is it really necessary to use Epson brand ink, I have been using with success printpal.com for my ink. thanks

Last question first. You can use any ink, but the Epson driver needs to know exactly what those colors look like . That means that you need custom media profiles for the ink/paper combination you’re using to have an accurate print. Epson already supplies profiles for Epson Papers with Epson inks which provide generally good results when used as the Output Profile colorspace ( using ICM mode-"no color management" in the driver ) .

If you have an accurate monitor profile, and if your image is tagged with a recognizeable RGB colorspace, you should get pretty accurate results printing to a good media profile. See Ian Lyons’ two fine essays, <http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ps9_print/ps9_print_1.htm> and
<http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ps7_print/ps7_print_1.htm> , which should cover the ground you are walking on.
