All greys in Photoshop 7 and CS2 are Brown.
Greys are fine in Windows, games and with Corel Painter 9 and Windows Paint. Any Grey in an image will show as Brown in Photoshop.
If i draw with Grey it is grey when i save the image and look at it in windows or Painter. I tried different colour profiles and even reinstalled Photoshop 7 and CS2.

Thabks in advance.

Run Adobe Gamma from the Control Panel. PS is a colour managed environment.

the Gamma is fine and brightness has no effect on changing grey to brown. The same image in Windows, Imageready, Corel Painter IX and Windows Paint shows as grey. Any image with grey will show as Brown only in Photoshop. Even when i change the mode to greyscale greys are still brown.

Again: Run the aplet "Adobe Gamma" from the CP. It’s not (properly) done.

Other app’s behaviours has got nothing to do with it.

I ran Adobe gamma again and now it’s fine.
Before i used the Wizard and all it did was change the gamma. What that means is the only thing that changed was the Browns became darker. Tried the Wizard again with same results.
The Wizards appears to an idiot.

Thanks Rob.

Rebooted, greys were back to browns.
Reloaded Adobe Gamma, Browns returned to Greys.
Having a touch of OCD i have always deleted the Adobe Gamma from the startup menu, as it’s never made a single bit of difference to windows or Photoshop.
Now all of a sudden it does.
No idea why 😐

it’s never made a single bit of difference to windows or Photoshop.

Now it has perhaps you had better leave it in.

The applet in the control panel sets a profile (once) for your monitor.

The Gamma Loader in Startup loads it each time you start your computer.

Without it, Photoshop cannot manage colour correctly.

I have the same problem but it is Monitor specific for me. Color look fine on my old CRT, but the new 19′ Dell UltraSharp 1905FP show the grays in a brown tint.

Any ideas? I have not seen Dell post a new driver.

You need to profile your new monitor. Every monitor is different.

My understanding is that LCD can’t be profile with the Adobe Gama, nevertheless I tried it and it did not work. I have two Dell LCD at home, one at work and they all do the same thing.

Ideally, get a colorimeter; otherwise, use Wiziwyg from <http://www.praxisoft.com/pages/products.wiziwyg.html> , which does visual calibration of LCDs better than Adobe Gamma.

I am really sorry. I tried adjusting using the Adobe Gamma and this time I actually read the wizard directions and although subtle it made a huge difference in the color. My grays are no longer brownish and the stuff I read about not been able to adjust the 1905FP LCD was wrong. Thanks for your help.
