I’ve read on Adobe’s web site that any Photoshop version will allow upgrade to Photoshop CS2, but some eBay sellers say that Photoshop 6 is required. Does anyone know the true story? Thanks…

OK, you’re unwilling to believe the manufacturer of the program on what upgrades they support, right? :- )

I think if you do a quick search of the list archives, you’ll find that Adobe is telling the truth. Unless, of course, you’d buy into the conspiracy theory that because this forumn is run by Adobe that the info here is suspect.

See Adobe’s Upgrade Policy <http://store.adobe.com/store/products/master.jhtml ;storesessionid=XZN2WLXCHFHIZQFI0IKRT5GAVDJBIIV1?id=catPhoto shopUpgrade >

Beware of purchasing through non-autorized resellers. Many times they are pirated copies. Caveat Emptor.

Thanks for the information from both of you. I do believe what I read on Adobe’s web site, but you start getting a little gun-shy when so many tell different stories. I want to purchase an authorized Photoshop version, so I’m only bidding on those sellers that guarantee the upgrade will work. I think I’m on the right track, don’t you?

You need to make sure that you are getting a shrink wrapped copy with a manual, eligible for tech support AND activation.

If you can buy legit copies for a significant cost savings, sure, go for it. But as YrbkMgr points out, you’re taking a few risks to save a few bucks. And they’ll have your long money before you find out if the upgrade, is, in fact, legit.

But, yes, I would think that if they have a long history of high "Seller’s" ratings, you’re probably OK.

Again, Thanks for your help! I’ll be careful and only deal with seller’s that have high ratings. David

High ratings mean IMHO naught, zilch, nada

Send the seller an email asking if it is a fully legit sale with full transfer of rite to use complying with Adobe’s policies and practices.

IMHO be surprised if you receive a reply 8)

My rules for buying through eBay would be:

1) ignoring all product priced at $150 US or less.

2) ignoring people who have multiple auctions going on of the same products (or lots of other software products)(Do you really believe that someone bought 50 copies of Photoshop, and now decides he doesn’t really need them all that much.

3) make sure there is a phone number and street address for the vendor. Check the online phone books to see if it matches up. 4) And of course make sure the product is upgradable (don’t just accept his word for it, occasionally a pirate is known to lie).

If you want to be really sneaky, tell him you are being so thorough because you work for licencing at Adobe, and just want to verify that he is legit. That should shake all but the most despicable pirates.

LOL – and employ your own prorection force with (armed?) security?

It is fruadulent to claim to be what one is not unless, of course you really is Adobe Licensing person?

Do not understand what IMHO is! Can you explain? Excuse the stupidity!

IMHO – in my humble opinion

It is usually used to show that a personal view or opinion is being expressed and that the view doews not reflect any corporate policies or procedures

In other words one is speaking one’s own opinion rather than supporting the views of an organisation

Thank you all, again for the support and direction. Personally, if I could afford it I would just go buy the full CS2 version, but that’s life! Regards, David

Uh, David, I noticed when I briefly surveyed prices on eBay that most of the Buy-it-now prices area at or above full retail on the upgrade. (140-150 USD). So you may want to remember that when bidding.

Also, I didn’t try to find Adobe’s educational price for the upgrade, but if you can legitimately claim some connection to a school, that’ll take a significant bite out of the price.

Whoah!

There are quite a few freebies out there The Gimp for a start and MS Expression/Acrylic for another.

Adobe’s student/academic licensing is neat as (I believe unless told otherwise) it’s voluntary sector approach is similarly so (neat I mean).

There may be various upgrade paths from Elements to Photoshop proper

Well, as luck would have it, I already bought the Photoshop CS2 Upgrade from Amazon.com, and was trying to find a legitmate old version that I could use the upgrade on. I’m retired, and have been for 7 years. I should have bought Photoshop back when I was taking night courses at UCSC, but then JAVA was my learning curve, and now its photography, and if possible photo restoration. You guys have been great! Thanks a bunch, David

You pays your money and takes your chance.

If you are buying a version of PS6 which is advertised as upgradable, I would suggest paying for it with your credit card. That way if Adobe refuse to register it you’ll have a legitimate claim for a refund as per the credit card company’s (most of them anyway) policy.

For what it’s worth, I know of a couple of people who have successfully got themselves legitimately registered by this route.

Another possible level of protection: Buy through Amazon and pay via Amazon, rather than paying the seller directly. Amazon provides buyers with some degree of protection from fraudulent sellers.

I would suggest paying for it with your credit card

of course if it turns out to be unupgradable and pirated then you’ve just given your credit card number to a software pirate and you need to cancel the card and put a credit watch on your credit report for a year or three. i suggest not using a card, but using some third party escrow svc like paypal where the buyer never sees your actuall credit card # and credit info.

Of course, you’re right Dave (nice to see you back. How’s the house move going?).

I should have added: "assuming you have a card which offers internet fraud protection"

Thanks for the advice! I always use PayPal, and only those that offer PayPal Protection, with the exception of the occasional money order when seller’s do not accept PayPal, but never do I use my credit card on eBay. You guys have been very helpful, Thanks, David
