there is a action supplied with photoshop7 that will give a brushed metal effect on text. you could modify it to replicate the effect on anything i would think.

also…if you go to the adobe website there is a link where you can dowload all sortsa layer styles (as well as brushes, actions, tuts, tips, etc) that will give you what you want
