Im using Photoshop CS2 but Im running into a problem with images i process.

No matter what im doing to them or what pics they are, when i save them (as jpg btw, the source is also a jpg) i see little areas of pixelization on the image that i didnt see when looking and working with the source in photoshop.

I considered the possibility that it could be a hardware issue causing the odd effects, but why would it cause the problem to only occur after saving from photoshop?

is there anyhtign besides hardware failure that can cuase this sort of thing? is there some sort of process i need to do in photoshop before saving to prevent this?

Maybe the jpeg compression is showing up. are the originals from a high res camera, or a cheapy low res digital? if you are starting with a low res jpeg, and resaving it on a low quality setting, then perhaps you are compounding the issue. just a thought. i would save them as tiffs myself, and avoid the data loss. you could post before and after shots at pixentral to show here.

well the final place for the image will be a webpage, so i thoguht i would have to use the jpg format.

now this is not using source from camera photos, but backgrounds using created pics found on the internet. i will check the jpg compression i used for output, but i just assumed it kept it 1:1 unless i set it a certain way.

For the final file you will need a JPEG, but while you work on it, you are better off saving the image as a a TIFF or a PSD since each successive save as a JPEG degrades the image a little more

so evne if my source is a jpeg, saving the resulting edit to jpeg will degrade it?

also, is it possible to use tiff images on a webpage or will have to convert the tiff image to jpeg outside of photoshop?

Yes,whenever you save a jpeg, you are again going to see data being thrown away. it will surely be more evident on shots that are already of a low res nature, verses high res shots of top quality. you want to resave as little as possible using jpeg, so you choose tif or other lossless formats till you need the final file choice for the web. you could always dupe your file, and then open it and resave it multiple times using jpeg, and you possibly will be able to see the changes that happen to your file after multiple resaves.

Trooper,

or will have to convert the tiff image to jpeg outside of photoshop?<<

You will have to convert to .jpg for web use, but it doesn’t matter WHERE you convert it – Data will still be lost. That’s how JPG Compression works, it’s not that Photoshop is doing something different to every (any) other application.
