Help!! When I try to do ‘auto levels’ or auto contrast’ it now turns my image black. I was trying to adjust dark sky astrophotography images when suddenly it started doing this. I must have changed a setting but I don’t know which one. Also, when I use the ‘set white point’ dropper on an image in ‘levels’ it also turns the image black. The ‘set gray point’ and ‘set black point’ droppers function correctly.

Any idea what I can do to fix this?

Thanks!!!

The settings for these are in the levels and curves dialogs, under Options.

Michael,

Version 6 doesn’t have options in the Levels and Curves dialog, fyi.

I have only CS and CS2, so I can’t help with v6 if it’s different. Sorry. Maybe trashing your preference would help. It’s an all-purpose purgative, like castor oil; sometimes it works.

IOW Paul,

Try resetting your preferences per the procedure in the faq.

Peace,

I’ll try resetting the preferences this evening when I get home. Last night I deleted the entire Adobe Photoshop directory and all its files and then reinstalled the program, but the problem was still there. So there must be a file embeded in another directory (windows?) that is causing this problem.
I’ll let y’all know if the preference resetting works.
Thanks.

Reinstalling Photoshop, or deleting its folder, will not reset the preferences. Always delete the prefs before taking such drastic action.
