ok, i have searched all over and tried many different solutions, its time to just ask 🙂

I have a jpg that I need the largest dimension to be at most 1024 pixels and have enough resolution to read the text on it (itÂ’s a plot map). It is currently 5114×6504 (17.047in x 21.673in) at 300ppi. I am using CS.

When I use Image Size and set the Pixel Dimension height to 1024, the image degrades and text becomes unreadable. I try to increase the Resolution setting, but this in turn changes the Pixel DimensionsÂ… IÂ’ve tried many ways to get around thisÂ… but have wasted daysÂ… any help appreciated.

Thanks!
Jason

Jason,

You cannot steal pixels from a text character without degrading it.

What Burton says is quite correct.

I do hope you’ve been working on a copy. Each time you save and reopen in the Jpeg format you degrade the image due to Jpeg compression. Always work in a lossless format such as TIFF or PSD.

Also, when you are assessing an image in photoshop, always view it at 100%.

What is the image going to be used for? Print? On Screen? Internet?

You might try adding the text after you resize the base image (if it’s not too late). Then you can experiment with different fonts and with the anti-aliasing methods in the Text tool’s options bar.
