When trying to clean up my PC files (windows xp) I noticed that under documents and settings, applications, Adobe, PSCS, Browser there is a folder called photoshopCS with tons of files in a format that I can’t open. The file sizes indicate they are duplicates of my picture files. My question is what purpose do these serve and can I delete them?

What is the file extension?

The following files should be under the documents and
settings>application data\adobe\Photoshop\8.0\Adobe Photoshop CS\ folder:

Actions Palette.psp.lnk
Adobe Photoshop CS Prefs.psp
Brushes.psp
Color Settings.csf
CustomShapes.psp
Default Settings.iros
Favorites.psp
Gradients.psp
Keyboard Shortcuts.psp
Keywords.psp
New Doc Sizes.psp
Patterns.psp
PluginCache.psp
Recently Used Optimizations.irs
Styles.psp
Swatches.psp
ToolPresets.psp

Thanks for the reply.

I do have the files you cited in the Photoshop CS folder. But the ones I’m refering to are in another PhotoshopCS folder located inside the Filebrowser folder.

All the files have the name of my picture folders, e.g., "london trip" ,"janes visit". There are several with the same name. There is no file extension that I can discern. I’ve tried opening with a number of programs in addtion to PSCS with no luck.

Because they take up so much space I’d like to delete them if possible.

That’s probably your file browser cache. It contains thumbnails, keywords, and other information used by the file browser.

As Michael says, those are the FileBrowser Cache files – the thumbnails, metadata etc.

If you delete those, the FileBrowser will have to re-create them when you next go to that folder in the filebrowser. (And no, you cannot re-locate them to another folder/drive)

Thanks to all. I will leave them alone and get a bigger drive!
