I have typically saved JPEG files for web use using the Save As command and then adjusting the file compression until I was between 30-35 kb (as estimated by Photoshop 6.0). When I would check the actual file size of the saved file it was always almost exactly what Photoshop predicted. The same thing is not happening in CS2. File sizes estimated to be 30 kb are ending up at about 50kb. Even if I Save for Web as image only, CS2 still adds at least 10 kb. What exactly is being added to these files and how can I prevent it ? The experts at Adobe didn’t have a clue.

A color profile is being saved, along with metadata in Save As; this command actually creates an Exif compressed file, just as your camera does, rather than a pure JPEG. In Save for Web, you can save as a pure JPEG (JFIF) file with essentially no metadata, but you have to select the option not to embed a profile in the picture. If you embed the profile, that will swell the file size (and probably save the file as an Exif compressed file with little or no metadata beyond the fields (probably blank) required by the Exif standard.
