I recently purchased a Nikon D70s Digital SLR and began to take pictures in RAW format.

My problem is in converting and opening my NEF files in Adobe Photoshop. Can anyone guide me step by step how to convert or open my RAW files in Adobe Photoshop. I do know how to open them in JPG format.

I have installed Nikon Picture Project and Adobe CR2. I did not purchase Nikon’s Capture software because I thought Adobe’s provided most of the editing features offer by the Capture software. I have downloaded the new Raw Plug-in from Adobe but seem nothing is happening.

All help is greatly appreciated.

If you’ll go back and search both this foumn and the Adobe Camera Raw forumn, you’ll see that this is a FAQ and painfully precise directions have been posted a number of times.

The short answer is that Nikon and Adobe have competing plug ins. You need to remove the Nikon plug-ins from the Adobe PS plug in directory, AND THEN downloadn and install the correct version of Adobe Camera Raw.

Also, you don’t mention which version of Photoshop you’re running, and that’s critical. Photoshop CS1 and earlier do not allow you to directly open D70s NEF files. Photoshop CS2 does.

If you have an earlier version of Photoshop, you need to either upgrade or to convert your NEFs to Adobe’s DNG format (you can download that converter from the PS download page).

P.S. Did I leave out anything, Ramon?

Gilbert,

You’ll find more on this topic at the Adobe Camera Raw Forum:

That said, if you installed any Nikon software (Picture Project), it most likely installed a plugin in Photoshop which disables Adobe Camera Raw. Read the FAQs at the ACR Forum to find out how to deal with that.

Have fun with shooting RAW, I suspect that you’ll enjoy the control that it gives you.

Art, I figured someone else would post while I was typing, but I think you covered it nicely.

Thanks Ramon. I will look into that. I am new to this Forum. One question…. How do I remove the old plug-ins from photoshop? I have Photoshop CS2.

Change directories to (for instance) C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats and see if there are any files there that say "Nikon" in the file name (Nikon NEF Plugin.8bi).

If so, either delete them, move them, or rename then to change the extension.

I’m not familiar with Picture Project, so you may also want to search the other PS plug in directories for additional strays.

Then install ACR 3.2, reboot, and you should be all set. When you install or update any Nikon software, you will have to do this again (until and unless Nikon changes their install routine.)
