CS2 not saving file extensions

I’ve got a computer lab at a high school (all CS2 on WinXP)and we’ve got a serious problem – CS2 is not saving (appending) file extensions on the files when students save them. They have to manually add .PSD or .BMP or whatever to every file as they save them, or else they cannot open them later. If they manually rename the file, it is fine, as long as they are correct, but if they accidentally rename a JPG or a BMP as a PSD, they cannot get the OS to ‘forget’ it’s not really a PSD, and they can never open the file again. Anyone else run in to this? I cannot find anything about this in any forum or knowledgebase. Thanks…

Jon,

That’s odd behavior. First, reinstall Photoshop. It’s the least destructive in terms of personalized settings. If that doesn’t help, try resetting your preferences per the procedure in the faq.

Jon, check to see whether the computers display file extensions as part of the file name in Windows Explorer. If not, from within Windows Explorer, go to Tools > Folder Options > View, and UNcheck "Hide extensions for known file types". Reboot (may not be necessary, but it’s good voodoo) and see whether the problem is cured in Photoshop.

I assumed this was being done in explorer, thus viewable, but after some thought, it’s really unclear where they are being renamed or how.

But that reminds me to point out that simply changing the extension is a no-no. Photoshop will read the extension and if it’s JPG, it expects to find a specific file structure. So don’t rename extensions.

What Mike said.

I was teaching in a lab at my college last night, and the wizards in support have turned off the ability for me to change the folder options.

About as stupid as Microsoft’s decision to default to hidden extensions.
